In a chronological narrative which develops fully many hitherto neglected aspects of Jacobite activities, George Jones provides an authoritative account of the period from the overthrow of James II in 1689 to the defeat of the Young Pretender at Culloden in 1746.

The center of attention is the Jacobite Court, with its chains of correspondence to agents in the European capitals, to foreign rulers and their ministers, and to active Jacobites in England. Throughout his book, Jones has been careful to present a balanced point of view—neither Whig nor Tory, neither Catholic nor Protestant. Especially interesting is the new insight given into the character of the Old Pretender.
