The fighter pilot more often then not is expected to operate their airframe alone, while traveling at high airspeeds far beyond those of a bomber or transport aircraft, and at those high speeds are expected to perform high performance acrobatic manoeuvres to evade those trying to bring them down while Navigating with point point accuracy. Over the decades their Airframes and Power Plants have changed since their complicated gestation in The Great War, where they started out flying precarious flying machines made out of wood, wire and canvas. After those came the more modern and aerodynamically sound monoplane designs of the second World War, and today we have computerised 'Fly by Wire' Jets able to do things that their predecessors could only read and dream about while cruising along at airspeeds that exceed Mach 1. Even with all these technological improvements Fighter Pilots of the past and present still have one thing in common - a need to out-think and out-fly their opponents in a one-on-one contest where everything is at stake.

Illustrated throughout with Colour and Black & White archival photos from various sources which are supported by artwork, memorabilia and other flying mementoes, this new updated edition of Lone Eagle is an interestingly vivid work that recalls the Airmen and Airwomen who have flown in and designed or maintained/restored these diverse types of aircraft including such designs as the Fokker Triplane and D VII, Sopwith Pup and Camel, SE5A, Spitfire, Hurricane, Typhoon, Mosquito, Thunderbolt, Mustang, Lightning, Kittyhawk, Corsair, JU 88, FW190, ME 109, ME 110, ME 262, Zero, Yak 1/7/9, PO2, Meteor, Phantom, Harrier, Tornado and F-15. Through engaging personal stories and remembrances from these Airmen and Airwomen from all across the world, the Aviation Author and Photographer Philip Kaplan has designed and written a history that examines all this and so much more.
